Meet Nick Hill aka Rick or Harley Quinn

Day job: Lubrication technician at Eraring Power Station
Fitness Background (before starting Crossfit)
I played a year of AFL, two years of Rugby and six years of soccer. Been to different gyms on and off since the age of 16.
Why did you start Crossfit? Nerida Bint convinced me to try Crossfit, I’ve been doing it ever since.
How has CrossFit changed your life? Crossfit changed my life by allowing me to eat all the Raj’s corner I want guilt free!
What’s your favourite WOD or movement? My favourite movement would be squat cleans or anything that doesn’t involve pushing a barbell overhead.
What’s your current goal? Current goal/s – Handstands and improve my Snatching
What do you love most about the CF Hunter community? Corey Bruce (Pup) is what I love most about the CFH community and is why I get out of bed every morning.

MAY MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Meet Tony Rose AKA Mr T
Age: 45 Years Old.  The older I become. The fitter I get…
Occupation: Electrician. Signal Electrician on the Railway – Shift Worker.
Tell us something we don’t know about you:
I love to watch youtube clips that make me cry.
The simple act of caring remains an endless ripple…
Fitness Background:
I grew up on Bar Beach Ave so I pretty much surfed everyday as a grommet at Bar Reef and sailed in the summer months on Lake Macquarie and Port Hunter. In my 30’s I loved long distant running.
Why did you start Crossfit:
Health! Working in a safety critical environment my company provided regular health checks for all employees. Over a number of years from the age of 38, my body and wellbeing began to trend downwards. Key performance indicators such as muscle mass, bone mass, blood pressure/glucose and HDL cholesterol all illustrated my slow decline in overall health.
I looked at my options of a ‘Global Gym’ versus a ‘Crossfit – Box’ and I thought to myself it was time to do life differently. I have never looked back at my decision to change to our Box – Crossfit Hunter.
How has Crossfit changed your life?
I felt a true change within myself during Open Work-out 16.4 (scaled). In those 13 minutes of pain I acknowledged that continuous hard work and a passion to try just that bit more can lead to a healthy existence in my late 40’s and beyond. Can 1 hour of Crossfit training out of a possible 24 hour day really make a difference to my physical health and mental wellbeing? YES.
What’s your favourite WOD or movement?
Give me any cardio or plyometric move and I will do it passionately – box jump paired with burpees. Love them.
If I am loving those movements, do you know what I am fearing? All barbell workouts. Snatch – I lack confidence under the bar.  Cleans or Power Cleans – I am still using my arms versus my whole body to do all the work. “When the arms bend, the power ends” is my motto to change my ways.
What’s your current goal?
Rx Master Men 50’s in the Open.
Current age – 45. Therefore, I have the next 5 years to develop barbell confidence and a host of other short term goals including muscle ups, HSPU, overhead squats, pistol squats to complete my long term dream. It really will be one rep at a time until I can do AMRAP.
What do you love most about the CF Hunter Community?
I feel every single member that turns up for a CF Hunter’s class is passionate about health and is passionate about fitness.
I feel every single member that turns up for a CF Hunter’s class wants to fulfil a goal of any scale, of any magnitude because CF Hunter focuses on being better than yesterday.
The CF Hunter Community is as simple as the push and pull exercises we do in the class.
Push: We push each other to excel in health and fitness.
Pull: We pull together to fulfil our goals, hopes and aspirations.

September Member of the Month

Meet this weeks’ member in the spotlight – AYLA JOHNSON!
This little powerhouse is going places! 4 months in and she’s almost got her first muscle-up!

Day Job: Accountant, Blackburn Business Advisers

Fitness Background BC (Before CrossFit): As a kid and throughout my teens I did little athletics, and after I finished school I’ve always tried to stay fit by going to gym a few times a week and training outdoors.

Why did you start CrossFit? What do you get out of it? I initially started crossFit because I was very curious to see what it was all about and whether it would suit me. Turns out I absolutely love it, training in a group of highly motivated people has shown me I could do things I never knew/or thought I could do. Each week I feel more comfortable with the movements and I’m constantly learning new things the body can do.

Why CrossFit Hunter? I heard great feedback from friends who are members at CrossFit hunter. Very happy with the decision, the community at CF Hunter is AMAZING and I don’t know what I would do without them now

Best Hunter moment/story? I’d have to say the WOD in the Open where we had to do chest to bar pull-ups in the scaled version. I had no idea how I was going to do them, as I was new to crossFit and still doing ring rows. When it came to it, I got on the bar and started doing these pull-ups! This was a shock for me and also to everyone I was training with at the time.

Favourite Movement? Back squats / Pull ups.

Least favourite movement? I’d have to say Snatching! This one is a work in progress!

August Member of the Month

MEMBER OF THE MONTH! It’s Shauni!

Shauni has been surprising herself in many WODs lately but it’s no surprise to us! This quiet achiever is the epitome of determination and dedication.

Name: Shauni Urquhart

Day job: Working as a barista at Paleo cafe while studying nursing at Uni.

Fitness background BC (Before CrossFit)? I trained in taekwondo for 6 years as well as going to the gym but thought I’d change things up and I’m glad I did, CrossFit is so enjoyable and challenging.

Why Hunter? I moved to Newcastle last April and saw all these crazy people running up and down the hill so I decided to join not long after.

Favourite Hunter memory? The open definitely was a highlight but the day I first came, there was 2.4k of running. The last 400m I just wanted to stop but Chloe encouraged me and finished it with me.

Favourite movement? Funnily enough running is my favourite part now!

Least favourite movement? Overhead squats!
